Nissos Shelter: Home for Ukrainian Children

The Nissos shelter which comes from the Greek word for “island” is home to newly arrived children from Ukraine. Ten children from 10 months to seventeen years old were welcomed into the shelter in April after the evacuation of their orphanage in the war zone of Ukraine. They are cared for by two Ukrainian caretakers along with the psychologists and social workers of The Home Project in a town house in the center of Athens. The home which is decorated with cheerful murals and children’s artwork, provides a safe and welcoming environment for the children. The older children are enjoying summer camp where they can make friends and learn Greek. In September they will be enrolled in the local public school.

No children are photographed in order to protect their identities.
